About halfway between Lima and Pisco is San Vicente de Canete and from here a road follows the river Canete up in the mountains and eventually takes you to Huancayo in the highlands. In the scrub along the river occurs Slender-billed Finch, here at it´s northernmost limit. Also look for the distinct race of Bran-coloured Flycatcher in the scrub. Higher up the habitat gets more dry and there are stands of cactus. Cactus Canastero, Peruvian Sheartail, Great Inca-finch and Scarlet-fronted Parakeets occur here. Higher up there are some patches of polylepis and a new set of birds. Rusty-crowned Tit-spinetail, Black Metaltail and Andean Parakeet are among some of the inhabitants. Even higher up you are in the puna zone and the lakes here holds lots of wetland birds like ducks and Andean Geese. The rare White-bellied Cinclodes have been seen here. An undescribed race of Dark-winged Canastero reaches it´s northern limit here too. There are some basic accomodation along the road otherwise camping is the only option. |
